Image Collections

There’s been quite a demand recently for images for reports, projects, presentations, and various other endeavors so I’ve spent some time looking around and found a variety of image search sites and image collections that are copy-right free.  The also have the added bonus of being much less likely to pull up unrelated, appropriateness-challenged images.

Collections

Nature, Animals, and Science

Arkive Image Collection

Garst Photographic Collection

Nasa Images

Smithsonian Science and Nature

History, Culture, Art, and People

Visual Arts Collection

Smithsonian Humanities

Miscellaneous

Kids Click – Reminds me of the Yahoo! portal of old.

School-Friendly Clipart

Ask Kids Image Search

Copy-Right Free Photos.com – Best used with high school kids.

National Geographic Galleries – Best used with high schoo kids.

I hope these are useful.  If there’s a category you don’t see but need, let me know and I will try to find something for you.

Also, even though these sites should be mostly school-appropriate, they are not guarenteed to be so and should be used with caution.

Book Fair Website!

The Fall Book Fair is right around the corner. The Book Fair will start 10/19 and end on 10/23.

The Friday before the book fair we will have a Faculty and Staff Sneak Peek from 3:30 – 4:00. This would be a great time for teachers and other staff to come in and see what’s to be had as well as create classroom donation wish lists that will be posted during the library.

On Friday we will have the Book Fair Bash! There will be food, games, prizes, and a lot more. This will be during parent/teacher conferences and would be a great place to unwind after all the “official business” is taken care of.

If you would like to volunteer your time setting up the fair, taking it down, or helping out with the Book Fair Bash be sure to let me know.

European Explorers

September 9, 2009 at 9:23 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

I know that many of you have been researching European explorers and it can be difficult to find information on the lesser known ones. Below are a few credible links that I dug up. I hope they help.

For the mythology fiends

As some of you have projects and papers currently revolving around Greek and Roman mythology I took a few minutes to find some good, credible resources.  These should be useful:

http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/

http://bartleby.com/bulfinch/

http://www.library.theoi.com/

The first two links are more reference-based sources and the last one contains many texts of the actual myths.

Don’t forget you can also use the linked encyclopedia to the left.

Hope it helps.

Exciting News

I wanted to let everyone know that we can now use all the Gale search databases from home.  As someone taking classes, I know I am looking forward to being able to look things up from home instead of having to stay late at school.  The links do require a password to use at home.  You can ask me for it at school or send me an email and I will gladly provide it.

Also, now that we have the library looking a bit more polished it’s time to bring in some new books.  In the next month or so I will be adding books to many different sections of the library.  I have taken a lot great suggestions from teachers and students – and I can’t wait to get more.  If you know of something that our library absolutely, positively can’t live without, stop by and see me to fill out a short (less than 1/2 page) suggestion form so that I can try to find it.

I’ve had a lot of fun working in the library and getting to know all of you and I can’t wait to see what this year holds!
